So you’re one of those guys who’s been lifting his whole life – you’ve picked up little tidbits of knowledge here and there and you know the ins and outs of weight training. Think again pal. The fitness community is plagued with misconceptions so read on as I debunk, disprove, and falsify common fitness myths.
Myth #5: “Lifting Weights Makes Ladies less Ladylike”
Gentlemen, this exercise myth is negatively impacting each and every one of us. Everyday this fallacy has women scared that if they lift, their boobs will disappear and they will be cursed with manly biceps. Lifting weights will not strip a woman of her femininity but will more likely accentuate her womanly curves. Performing lighter weights for higher repetitions will deliver the curvy results that we can all enjoy. Now that this myth is debunked guys will be taking more frequent water breaks to admire our lady counterparts doing squats and bent over rows. Be polite; don’t stare. Next time you see the hottie from next door waiting in line for pilates offer to give her some weight training advice. You’ll finally have a reason to strike up a conversation with her and she will think you’re a training guru.
Myth #6: “Never Squat Without a Weight Belt”
When squatting heavy weight it is recommended you wear a weight belt to provide additional support to your spine as it is loaded with immense compression forces. Using belts should be restricted only to lifts that are approaching 80% or more of your one rep max on lifts with extreme compression forces such as squat or deadlift. Ditch the belt for lighter lifts. With lesser loads this piece of equipment becomes nothing more than a not so trendy accessory. Truth is the belt transitions from being supportive to acting as a crutch under lighter weight. Squatting or performing deadlifts without the backing of the belt forces the core muscles to engage, developing rock hard abs. Ditch the crippling girdle and put your natural waistband to work. Reach multiple goals simultaneously. Boost your squats and carve abs worth a second glance all by leaving your weight belt at home on leg day.
